At Rude Bwoy, we’re always looking at ways we can do things better. Our sustainability goals come to life as initiatives for sun, sea, sand, and social.

Our Story

THE RUDE BOY, ALSO DUBBED RUDE BWOY OR RUDDY, WAS BORN AFTER THE EMERGENCE OF SKA MUSIC.

The Rude boys

1962-1964

When Jamaica was relieved from colonial rule in 1962, mines and factories were created in Kingston in hopes of developing a reliable income source for the island. Kingston quickly transformed to an industrial city, encouraging young natives to migrate from the island in search of employment and economic prosperity.

1963

As the gap between rich and poor began to widen, young Jamaican natives created a new identity and became Rude Boys.

2 tONE Records

1963-1965

Walt Jabsco was the famous Jamaican cartoon for 2 Tone Records label that served as the first official image of the Rude Boy movement. 2 Tone Records was responsible for debuting many Ska and Rock Steady artists who better defined the look of the Rude Boy movement.

1965

Typically wearing tight-fitting mohair suits and porkpie hats, Jamaican Rude Boys were influenced by Jamaican immigrant modernists and British fashion. As Ska transformed into Rock Steady, Rude Boy uniquely became the mascot for the popular music genre.

Rude Boy served as one of the most extreme and exaggerated examples of Jamaica itself. Inspired by a mix of reality and TV, Rude Boys modeled themselves off famous heroes and villains of cowboy films, especially ultra-violent spaghetti westerns that first appeared in the mid-1960’s.

ICON

1963-1965

After the release of the Jamaican blockbuster, The Harder They Come, Jimmy Cliff became one of the first examples of a true Rude Boy. He is infamous for his main role as Ivanhoe Martin, a Jamaican criminal vigilante. He quickly became one of the most celebrated icons of the Rude Boy Movement, inspiring the likes of The Wailers.

ABOUT RUM?

Rude Bwoy Rum starts with the high quality cane sugar sourced from around the world. It’s a thick, dark and sweet syrup that is left over after a three stage sugarcane refining process, resulting in the molasses containing less sugar, but still holding the sugarcane sweetness and concentrated flavours of the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals.
